New technologies and stories

WHAT DOES XR MEAN?

Let's start with the acronym: XR stands for "Extended Reality," a term encompassing various immersive technologies, including Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR).

XR refers to a range of experiences that blend elements of the physical and digital worlds. It provides immersive, interactive, and multi-sensory experiences through technologies such as headsets, smart glasses, motion sensors, and advanced software.

Virtual Reality (VR) creates entirely digital environments that simulate a physical presence in a three-dimensional world, offering a fully immersive experience—almost like stepping into another time or place.

Augmented Reality (AR) overlays digital information onto the real world, enhancing the user experience without replacing the physical environment. The level of immersion is partial, but adding digital elements to the real world sparks the imagination bringing new depth to storytelling.

Mixed Reality (MR) integrates virtual objects into the real world, enabling interaction between physical and digital elements. This technology is popular in gaming contexts, promoting active engagement from users.

Fun Fact: In June 2024, the 15th edition of AWE, the leading event in the XR industry, took place in California. It revealed that the XR market is now valued at $35 billion. Interestingly, Artificial Intelligence finds its most creative applications within XR.

STORYTELLING IN XR

You may have noticed that many images on this site were generated with AI. Not only that — some of the graphics used for our virtual reality work are created using generative AI algorithms. This is one of several ways narrative techniques can merge with new technologies to create communication materials.

At the heart of our approach, Good Tales uses business storytelling techniques not only to build the narrative but also to read the audience. "Reading the audience" means knowing and positioning our audience so well that we can think, laugh, and speak as they would. This approach enables the audience to connect with our story, experiencing it as if it were their own. We use then the well-known framework of "The Hero’s Journey" to create a captivating narrative arc, which is then adapted through technology to create the final product. The choice of technology depends on the type of story, the physical space it will occupy, and, of course, the target audience.

We use immersive experience technologies, since they provide the perfect setting for effectively conveying narrative experiences. In other words, the inherent "immersive" nature serves as an ideal gateway to access the extraordinary world of the heroes. We say this with the understanding that technologies quickly age and become obsolete, while stories never die. As far as we are concerned, we adapt our content and workflows to the most cutting-edge tools available on the market.
